The default suit style typically opted for, when dressing for business or a formal occasion is the two-button suit. However, seeing as there are no actual rules to what type of suits suitable for work why not take it a notch up and positively differentiate yourself from the rest, especially for a presentation favoured occasion like a presentation or an important meeting/event.
A double breasted suit is as appropriate and comfortable as a two buttoned suit for work and it allows you to add a more elegant and sophisticated touch to your look on the day. This can allow you be recognised as one who pays strong attention to his appearance and for those who might not be aware, presentation is a very important factor when engaging with a large/senior audience both to you and them as it also helps build your confidence during engagement.
I also like to add a bit of character to my double breasted suit with a strong textured tie and some added colour through my stripped shirt, statement socks and contrasting pocket square. You might wonder why I still opted for a stripped shirt on a pattern suit but seeing as they are of different patterns and stripe thickness, that remains a go-go.

To wrap up the bold look, I opted for some smokey brown leather single monk strap shoes (as I like to call them) to add some extra depth to the entire outfit; It does give it a more Italian feel.

Can the double breasted suit be worn with a waistcoat? I.e two piece double breasted or is it a faux pas

Good question! Its not a faux pas but it can be seen as an outdated style in fashion.
I personally don’t see the point of it as a well fitted double breasted blazer should already cover most areas where a waistcoat would be seen. And a waistcoat adds more formality and depth to a suit so an unbuttoned double breasted blazer would also not to the waistcoat justice.
However, if you are to opt for one, a seven buttoned lapelless waistcoat should be best.
