I’m certain that you readers are all aware of the thrilling spy film called Kingsman: The Secret Service starring Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Taron Egerton and more, directed by Matthew Vaughan (Kick Ass & X-men: First Class). It is about a veteran secret agent who takes a young street kid under his wings and develops him into an elite spy like himself.
One thing you might not be aware of is the craftmanship and history behind the outfits worn in the movie. The elegance and sophistication behind the modern gentleman look in the movie is of no coincidence and I am sure you’ll be intrigued to find out how all this came about.
Early on in the production, Matthew Vaughan teamed up with world-renowned e-retailer MR PORTER and costume designer Ms Arianne Phillips on the first ever “costume to collection” project. An interesting take out of this is to think of how many style icons you have imitated subconsciously and struggled to acquire their outfits or similar. For the first time ever, a unique shoppable collection has been carefully created that stands out from the everyday gentleman attire – The MR PORTER Kingsman Collection.
Q+A with Toby Bateman (MR PORTER Buying Director) & Ms Arianne Phillips
After attending the Question and Answer discussion with Toby and Arianne and being presented with the opportunity to view the collection first hand, there were a few interesting points on the collection that are worthwhile knowing. Below are also a few pictures from the event.
- The same fabrics used to produce the outfits for the movie have been used in this collection.
- It is aimed at a younger audience and a perfect example of clothing for the modern day gentleman.
- The collection is 100% British, from the fabrics, production, styles and patterns – Savile Row inspired.
- The pattern choices were extremely important to the uniqueness of the collection. Traditional fabrics used to create these well cut suits was an important part to this collection.
- The best heritage British craftsmen were carefully chosen to work on this collection. These include Turnbull & Asser, George Cleverley, Cutler & Gross, Drake’s London and more.
- A 2nd season will follow this collection.
- The Kingsman collection is here to stay!

Favourite Items From the Collection
Cashmere Slippers
Designed by one of Brtian’s finest shoemakers George Cleverley, this effortless elegant craft with a real show of sophistication is probably one of the best slippers I’ve seen to date. Not only does the colour combination appeal to the eyes but the subtle use of designs, leaving the crest to do all the talking. The fine trimmed toe box has to be the winner punch for me.
Stripped Woven Silk Tie
Any tie crafted by Drake’s London is a must own and they have outdone themselves here. When looking for a high energy combination to your outfit, this can be the perfect addition as it also a perfect example of a timeless piece that can never go out of style.
Field Jacket
Made by the legendary Scottish company Mackintosh. This waxed-cotton tartan jacket is everything you want in a field jacket. Its strong character is achieved through the tartan pattern which is easily complimented by the oiled-leather collar and cuffs. A perfect off-duty repertoire.
Double-Breasted Check Suit
This suit is a definite winner. From the cut, seams and tailoring, all up to the Prince of Wales check used to pattern this double-breasted suit. You can be forgiven for mistaking yourself as an associate to Prince Charles when sporting it. You can really pair this with items as plain as a white shirt, green dotted tie and black oxford shoes and still be the pick of the bunch.
Leather Briefcase
Perfectly designed by Swaine Adeney Brigg, this handmade leather briefcase is another great example of a timeless piece that will always present your look with elegance and a spark of energy. What wins it for me is the colour used for this beautiful item. The tan leather is definitely different from the everyday black or dark brown leather pieces so this is surely a style winner no matter the occasion and it will hardly every upset any outfit you pair it with.
Rose Gold-Plated Key Ring
For those who love to keep their accessories luxury, this will be an awesome addition to your collection. From your house keys to car keys, this well crafted key ring by Deakin & Francis is a smooth choice to pair with them and embody your belief in paying attention to detail. I believe that a truly stylish gentleman takes his style beyond his wardrobe to his surroundings.
