Style Classic – The Polo Shirt

The polo shirt is a perfect example of a “style classic” as it has successfully been around for many years. It’s also one of the most worn and purchased items in a man’s wardrobe, guys who pay attention to their style and the guys who just wear clothes. But it’s not as simple to nail the polo as it is with a regular t-shirt, it needs to be complimented in the right way to show it’s beauty.

The fit needs to be right, the colours and patterns need to work really well with the rest of the outfit. But you don’t want to keep it too safe all the time and definitely don’t want to look like a golfer. What you should be looking for is to embrace the class of such a simple yet popular piece and then, it would finish up the outfit.

I opted for my stripped mesh classic-fit polo shirt by Ralph Lauren as it is a typical example of the classic polo. I also really like the touch of red in the logo, which gave the outfit a lot of depth and colour – Big things do come in small packages.
One important thing about the polo shirt is that it’s only as good as you wear it. I’m not a big fan of a tucked out polo shirt as it becomes too casual and basic, so I recommend you always tuck in your polo shirt and appreciate the new feel it would give your outfit. Trust me on this one, you won’t go back to flying your polo shirt.

As mentioned earlier, the red touch in the logo should be respected a lot to nail the outfit, so I went for a full cotton pair of trousers from Reiss to work nicely with the the stripes and maintain the simple and classic look I was going for. Furthermore, my choice of belt had to be either black or brown but I needed a bit of detail to the look, this left me with my dark brown leather belt from Tommy Hilfiger. Good enough colour for detail but not too flashy to upset a simple look.

The belt doesn’t do enough detailing so my footwear choice had to be a similar colour to increase the depth of the dark brown to the outfit. And when going sockless, what better than wearing some loafers with some jumping trouser to show the ankles. Similar to how I wore it in the Casually White article.
